Zimbabwean Pride

Culture & Identity

Zimbabwe's culture is built on community, creativity, resilience, and pride. Through music, food, sport, traditional dress, Ubuntu values, and artistic expression, we celebrate the traditions that connect Zimbabweans everywhere and keep our heritage alive for future generations.

The Sound of Zimbabwe

The Mbira (thumb piano) is the soul of Zimbabwean traditional music and is proudly recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. For generations, its captivating melodies have connected communities, preserved ancestral traditions, and celebrated Zimbabwean identity. Alongside the Mbira, vibrant genres such as Zimdancehall, Sungura, and Jit continue to shape Zimbabwe's musical landscape, inspiring audiences at home and across the global diaspora through rhythm, storytelling, and cultural expression.

The Taste of Home

Zimbabwean cuisine is a celebration of culture, family, and tradition. At its heart is Sadza, the nation's beloved staple, often enjoyed with dishes such as Muriwo Unedovi (leafy greens in a rich peanut butter sauce), Mazondo (slow-cooked trotters), and Biltong, a favourite dried meat delicacy. Refreshing Mahewu, a traditional fermented grain drink, completes the experience. Together, these iconic dishes represent the warmth, hospitality, and flavours that bring Zimbabweans together wherever they are in the world.

Arts & Craftmanship

Zimbabwe is internationally renowned for its stone sculpture, beadwork, weaving, pottery, wood carving, and contemporary visual arts. These artistic traditions tell stories of resilience, spirituality, community, and cultural pride while showcasing Zimbabwean creativity to the world.

Beliefs & Values

Zimbabwe's cultural identity is shaped by strong values of family, respect, community, and connection to ancestors. Across generations, Zimbabweans have embraced the principles of Ubuntu—the belief that our humanity is shared and strengthened through our relationships with others. Traditional customs, storytelling, ceremonies, and spiritual practices continue to play an important role in preserving cultural heritage, while many Zimbabweans also practise Christianity and other faiths. Together, these beliefs foster unity, resilience, compassion, and a deep sense of belonging.

Sport

Sport plays a significant role in Zimbabwean culture, bringing people together through shared pride and achievement. Zimbabwe has proudly competed at the international level in football, rugby, and cricket, showcasing talent and determination on the world stage. The national football team, the Warriors, and the national cricket team, the Chevrons, continue to inspire Zimbabweans across the globe and represent the resilience and spirit of the nation.

Traditional Dress

Zimbabwe's traditional attire reflects the rich cultural heritage of its people, featuring vibrant fabrics, intricate beadwork, and ceremonial garments inspired by Shona and Ndebele traditions. Traditional dress remains an important expression of identity, pride, and belonging. Through cultural celebrations and community events, ZIMAA NSW proudly showcases traditional attire, preserving customs and passing them on to future generations while celebrating the beauty and diversity of Zimbabwean culture
